Tariff Analysis Energy Efficiency Smart Metering

Our Directors have worked in both the Broker & Supplier sides of the Energy industry and I can confirm that Energy Suppliers do not provide tariff analysis or advice to consumers any longer. They used to prior to Deregulation but it is no longer seen as cost effective to provide a dedicated department, which would reduce income and therefore, profits. In those days electricity was a public service but, no longer. Further, the industry is now fragmented and suppliers do not see this as being their responsibility and neither do the distribution companies.

Suppliers now stick to the conditions, contained in Customers original connection agreement, that stipulate that it is the Customers responsibility to ensure supply tariffs are consistent with their particular requirements. Further, it is for the Distribution Company to provide metering and type of supply, for example, the required capacity for each site, LV or HV etc. It is primarily with the Distribution Companies that we shall be working to implement our recommendations while keeping the Suppliers in the picture so that charges are in line with the supply structure.

We provide advice prior to implementing any changes as the Client shall be required to confirm acceptance of our proposals before any action is taken and we shall, of course, need an separate Agreement with the Client giving us the necessary authorities.

In some instances, the changes are administrative ones that do not need meter changes. Some suppliers are happy to aggregate consumptions (STOD to MD, for example) but, unfortunately, not all. But power down time will occur when changing from Large Power to small power, from profile 8 to profile 4, for example, but, as I say, we would only suggest this where savings would justify the changes.

In other circumstances meter changes will be necessary, for example NHH (Non Half Hourly) to HH (Half Hourly) and vice-versa, but we would only recommend these actions where there are significant savings to be achieved. Even so, in most cases, power down time should not be that long.

We now also have available "smart metering" which is similar to HH Metering for larger NHH sites (standard profiles 5 through to 8) and this can be a useful management tool in controlling costs. However, I would only recommend these for high spend sites.

There is even the possibility to reduce costs at Half Hourly metered locations, again, in most cases there would be little, if any, power down time to worry about.
