Why are prices increasing so much?
UK consumers re-contracting for gas and electricity supplies in the last twelve months have experienced massive increases in their bills.
Commercial consumers in the UK are typically paying 10-30% more for their gas and electricity than a year ago -- a much larger increase than faced by competitors elsewhere in Europe. The increases are largely down to the surge in UK wholesale gas and oil prices, which are now around 20% above continental (oil-indexed) levels on a year ahead basis.
These increases in gas and oil prices directly impact electricity prices as some 40% of
all electricity is generated by gas power stations. With the UK becoming a
net importer of gas,
it is unlikely that gas and electricity prices will fall significantly in the
next 12-18 months.
High gas prices, coupled with the impact of EU Emissions Trading, have lead to increased wholesale electricity prices, which now exceed those in France, Germany and many other EU markets. Forward wholesale market prices for gas and electricity for the coming winter (2008-9) indicate that prices
are set to remain comparitively high. With little scope for absorbing these
rising costs, it is more important for consumers to ensure that they are getting
the best deal from their supplier.
